The Police high command has launched a new countrywide measure targeting armed robbers, with a blitz on users of vehicles bearing unlicensed DV/DP plates, which security experts claim are easy targets of get-away criminal gangs.
ACP Julius Avorga, head of MTTU, was quoted by CITI FM Sunday as saying that the police authorities were reacting to intelligence reports that indicated that unlicensed cars were increasingly being used by people to commit various deviant acts.
He said the evidence showed that armed robbers were consistently using DV/DP-plated cars for their raids.
The plates in contention are numbers assigned to newly imported vehicles when they are to be moved from the ports to vehicle registration centres for licensing.
Owners of such vehicles are expected to comply with stringent rules including strict logging of their itinerary.
However, as ACP Avorga observes, many such vehicle users are using them for reasons other than the original intention thus making them easy preys for marauding criminals.
The MTTU boss explains that the operation, now effectively underway, is actionable under Ghana’s motor laws which prescribe that “every vehicle that runs on roads and highways must be properly registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority.”
He said the operation aims at sanitizing the movement of vehicles which presently makes “crime detection and prevention difficult” for police officials.
