Police brutalize two

Eight gun-wielding policemen are reported to have beaten a staff of Kumasi-based Luv FM, a member of the Multimedia Broadcasting Company stable. The victim, Edward Kpegah who works with Luv FM was thrashed together with Frank Asante, the owner of Genesis Night Club at Amakom. Kpegah was detained after he was beaten and bruised by the eight policemen. Speaking to Joy News' Israel Laryea on the Super Morning Show Yaw Ansu Gyeabour, a co-worker of Kpegah indicated that the night club owner together with Luv FM had organised a ‘Leavers’ Night’ for Senior Secondary School graduates in Kumasi. He said during the show, the eight heavily armed policemen arrived on the scene and demanded to enter the club to effect an arrest. The owner of the Club, Asante, then told them it was improper to enter the club at that time with arms. An argument was said to have ensued between the policemen and Asante. The policemen then began beating him. Asante told Joy News he was beaten from all angles, with slaps and kicks to every part of his body. He fell down and was momentarily blinded. According to Asante, the policemen entered the club and began firing indiscriminately. The shots reportedly caused commotion in the club as patrons began running helter skelter. According to Yaw, Kpegah attempted to intervene by telling the policemen Asante was the owner of the club. They wouldn't listen, and rather pounced on him and thrashed him mercilessly. Not satisfied, they dragged him into their car and dumped him in the cells of the Central Police Station in Kumasi. Meanwhile, the Regional Commander, DCOP Frank Adu Poku, has assured that an immediate investigation would be conducted into the assault case. He has in the meantime ordered the Officer-in-Charge to gather all the policemen reported to be involved in the act to meet him immediately in his office. The commander deplored the action of his men and warned that any one of them found to have acted unprofessionally would be sanctioned, because no one was above the law. He said he had ordered the immediate release of Kpegah from the cells. DCOP Adu Poku said unjustified use of force, and especially in the instant case of violence, cannot be entertained in the service and pledged a thorough job would be done, regretting that he had just returned from a leave of office only to be met by the unfortunate incident.
