Police boss faces death threats

The Inspector General of Police Mr. Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, has been receiving what appear to be death threats from anonymous sources. According to the Ghanaian Times newspaper, the threats have come in the form of text messages and they centre on issues such as the MV Benjamin cocaine scandal and the recent transfers within the Ghana Police Service. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, two of such threats were received and the IGP is not treating them lightly. One of the messages shown to the Times, read: “You were able to come out of the cocaine case but this one you will never go free. We will show you that power is not everything. we are sorry 4 your life”. The second message read: "Mr. IGP,… (name withheld) is leaving with his 2 legs but u will stay in a wheel chair. We shall see. u have only 7 days 2 enjoy the post". As to the motives behind the messages, the source said it will not rule out their linkage to the retirement of some senior police officers announced last month. It said that investigators would probe the source of the messages. The Police Council, in a letter dated August 24, and signed by the IGP, directed some 22 senior police officers to proceed on their terminal leave this month, prior to their retirement.
