The police at Nkoranza have placed in custody a 25-year-old known drug addict who allegedly attempted to burn down the six-hectare Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, a popular tourist attraction.
Isaac Kwasi Adjei mentioned Kwaku Dagarti as his source of hard drugs and the police arrested him to help in investigations.
Nana Osei Kwadwo, chairman of the fire volunteer squad at Boabeng, told the Ghana News Agency that Adjei set fire to the place last Sunday when most of the residents had gone to church with the intention to destroy the sanctuary.
He said some of the residents at home helped the squad to put off the fire and that Adjei was seen with a dog and some farming implements at where the fire was and when arrested he did not deny setting it.
The chairman said Adjei was handed over to the police whilst the fire volunteers combed the area to ascertain any casualty among the monkeys.
Customarily, any monkey that dies at the sanctuary is buried at a special cemetery created by the elders in the town and rituals are performed for it as they are considered sacred animals.
