Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier-Sosu, has denied being involved in the unlawful blockade of road and destruction of public property during a protest in his constituency on Monday, October 25.
According to him, the allegation made by the Police is an afterthought manufactured by the security agency to shift the people's attention from the critical issues of bad roads raised by the protest.
In a press release, he stated that "the Police Administration has nothing to investigate about this demonstration.
"The Police were part of the demonstration from the beginning till the end. There was no casualties, no destruction of public or private property."
The Madina MP, together with some youth of his constituency, embarked on a protest from Otinibi to Ayi-Mensah to demonstrate against the poor road network in the area last Tuesday.
According to the MP, after he had addressed his constituents, the Police demanded that he report to the Regional Commander of Police for questioning.
He declined the invitation and indicated that he was to attend a parliamentary meeting in preparation for the resumption of the House.
However, the police officers attempted to forcefully apprehend him in the presence of his constituents, an act which he described as contempt of Parliament, upon which he wanted the Speaker to take action against the police officers.
Clearing the air on his role during the demonstration, he revealed that in the early hours of that fateful Monday, the Adenta Divisional Commander, ACP Winful informed him that some of the angry youth and trotro drivers were massing up, blocking roads and some burning tyres.
He assured the Police that because such unlawful behaviour was not part of the plans, he would de-escalate the situation once he got to the premises.
"Indeed, once I got to Ayi Mensah, there was an Obonu FM reporter who joined my car and was with me till we got to Kweiman, where there was a roadblock. I got out of my car and went to speak with the youth in the presence of the Police until we got them to clear the roads for people to move."
"From Kweiman, I drove to Danfa, where we had a similar incident together with the burning of tyres. There again, I got out of the car, in the presence of Police and, together with some of the officers, spoke with the angry youth and got them to join us to Otinibi," he revealed.
Mr Xavier-Sosu stated that the youth leaders, assembly members, and other leaders present at the demonstration can attest that the police administration is only twisting facts to back their "unlawful arrest and needles interference" with his work as MP.
"The Police Administration is more interested in Politicking than fighting crime, and that is a shame and indictment on the current IGP," he added.
