The general public and corporate institutions that intend to withdraw or deposit huge sums of money have been advised to seek necessary assistance from the Ghana Police Service to avoid any likely robbery incident.
The directive from the Police forms part of urgent security measures being instituted to control the recent cases of robbery attacks reported in the Greater Accra region.
At least four broad daylight robberies have been recorded in parts of the capital city this week.
In one instance, the robbers opened fire leaving a bystander with gunshot wounds.
The robbers in the separate incidents made away with huge sums of money in the heist. The Rambo-style nature of their operation has become a cause for concern for eyewitnesses and residents.
But the Police says it has scaled-up security measures to deal with this threat.
"We urge the public and corporate institutions who intend to withdraw and deposit huge sums of money to exercise caution or contact the Police for assistance for such transaction," a statement signed by the Acting Director-General of Public Affairs, ACP Kwesi Ofori warned.
The Police has also placed a financial reward of GHS50,000.00 for any person who can come forward with information that will lead to the arrest of the suspected thugs.
Robbery incidents recorded
On Monday, September 20, at Achimota along the Accra-Amasaman highway, four armed robbers executed the well-planned and coordinated heist.
The bandits appeared to have tailed a woman from a bank at Abeka, where she went to withdraw a large amount of money.
Three of the motorbikes surrounded the woman’s vehicle whilst waiting for the traffic light to turn green.
One of the robbers forced open the driver’s door and pointed the gun at the woman.
She handed over three bags containing money to the robbers without hesitation.
The robbers quickly jumped behind the waiting motorcycles and sped off leaving the woman traumatised in traffic.
The second incident occurred near a bank at Kwashieman on Wednesday, September 22.
A man, who is yet-to-be-identified, was shot in the leg by robbers not long after he came out of the bank and they made away with his money.
However, it is not immediately known if he was being trailed by the robbers or otherwise.
According to a police statement, a 33-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint of an amount of ¢29,000.
The victim escaped unhurt. A bystander however sustained some injuries after the robbers fired gunshots.
Police in Accra are currently pursuing three persons, according to that statement.
The fourth incident was recorded on Friday morning at Sampa valley near the Weija barrier.
Similar to the previous ones, the victim had just withdrawn an amount of money in a bag when the gun-wielding men on a motorbike, fired shots and robbed him.
