The police have declared war against land guards and warned that they will deal ruthlessly with those who take the law into their own hands in land disputes.
“The police and other security agencies are resolved to crush the practice once and for all,” Director of Operations, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jonathan Yakubu said at a press briefing.
He said activities of land guards were a source of great worry to society as some of them went to the extent of torturing innocent people.
He said the police would not allow land guards to become private soldiers, stressing that it was unconstitutional and criminal for an individual or group of people to possess fire arms without permit.
“Even the private security services are not allowed to possess weapons”.
He urged those under threat from land guards or embroiled in land litigation to report to the Property Fraud Unit of the Police Criminal Investigations Department.
Deputy Director of the CID, Patrick Timbillah advised the public to obtain genuine documents for their parcels of land.
