This Ghana Premier League season has seen giants, Kotoko, become profligate.
They've converted far less than they have created, and now coach Steve Polack has charged his strikers to stop firing blanks. For him, the basics of goalscoring should have been taught long before his players got to this level.
"The coach is not the one in front of the goal; the coach is not doing that. As a player, you have to take responsibility. So the next question is, what is the coach’s job at training? We [Kotoko] are not an academy, we are a premier team. You don’t learn things like that."
Kotoko have scored just 20 goals in 25 games, while letting in 17. Meanwhile, the top three teams on the table - Aduana, WAFA and Hearts - have more than 30 goals.
“In England, premier players have to keep the ball and have to shoot past the goalkeeper, you just put them in position and they have to do that. So it’s not actually our job to do that,” Polack said on Sunday.
Kotoko's poor form in front of goal was laid bare on Sunday when playing bottom-of-the-table Bolga All Stars. The Porcupines could only score twice despite creating 15 clear chances at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. Among the chances spurned was a penalty, which was skied by Yakubu Mohammed.
