Young Ghanaian Poet, Jewell King-Speaks, has shared the story of the traumatic experiences he went through growing up in an abusive home with his father, a pastor, who violently abused their mother and physically assaulted her for trivial reasons.
Talking to Emefa Adeti on the Prime Morning show, he intimated that those moments were some of the most difficult times he and his siblings have ever been through. It was even worse for their mother, he added.
"Anytime she did something wrong, she'd suffer the consequences from my father," he said.
"Mostly it begins with just an argument and then punches follow. And because of that, it was difficult for me to answer questions in class. I found it hard to be outspoken because I thought that when I go wrong, I'll be beaten."
"My dad was very aggressive and strong so my siblings and I couldn't do anything to stop him. We would just watch him beat my mum till he gets tired. My dad was a pastor too, but he'd beat us and go to Sunday church like nothing was wrong, even though people knew what we were going through".
Now a poet, Jewell’s experience has made him an advocate against domestic abuse and he recites his pain in ‘beautiful’ words. His poems contain verses about domestic violence and abuse, which he champions the cause against.
