With five months to go for the December elections, the People’s National Convention have expressed worry over the Electoral Commission’s delay in the reopening of the voters register.
According to the party the delay has made it difficult to plan and strategise ahead of the elections.
Having cited resource constraints as the reason for the delay in the past, the PNC is further confused why the EC is still dragging its feet even though it has taken custody of the needed logistics to conduct the exercise.
Speaking to Joy News, Chairman of the party Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan said his party together with the others are planning to hold an emergency Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting with the EC to demand urgent action.
In a swift response on Joy News, the Public Affairs Director of the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry said the Commission expects to reopen the voters register at the end of this month.
He said the exercise is just a supplementary registration for those who have just turned 18 and the others who for various reasons could not register the last time it was opened.
According to him the EC will meet very soon to decide on the date to conduct the exercise after which a statement will be issued.
The EC expects additional equipments by the end of this week to be able to conduct the exercise, Mr. Parry concluded.
