Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has vehemently addressed the allegations brought against him and the secret plot to remove him from office.
The IGP's presence before the parliamentary committee is in response to the leaked tape revealing a conspiracy to oust him from his position.
"I am here to respond to wild allegations, unsubstantiated by my brothers, in an attempt to cover up their shame. I am ready," he said on Tuesday, September 12.
Previous witnesses have leveled allegations against Dr. Dampare, compelling the committee to seek his perspective on the matter.
His comments follow COP Alex Mensah’s claim that the IGP is not managing the police well, when the former appeared before the ad-hoc committee.
According to COP Alex Mensah, serving officers are unhappy with the IGP’s administration adding that any independent investigation would affirm this claim.
Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has categorically rejected these allegations, dismissing them as baseless and unworthy of serious consideration.
He emphasized that these claims have inflicted harm not only upon his family but also on the reputation of the police service.
“Those wild allegations without a shred of evidence have brought a lot of pain to myself, my family among the country and especially my wife and children, that were so patriotic because we believe in what you call pan-Ghanaian ism where you end up because of your multi-ethnic nature, everybody see, as long as the patient is your brother or sister, mother or father, uncle or aunt.
"Then the pain also to mind command my leaders, my team that we work together... and the thousands of police people who are appreciating the strides that we are making in transforming organizations to be the best institution in the country, and a reference point for the rest of the world. He came with all these allegations in order to cover up probably the shame associated with what they got themselves involved in in the first place."
Dr Dampare was of the view that this was not fair for the witnesses to have dragged his name into disrepute.
“I feel in my spirit that this is just not fair. Honourable chair, it is just not fair. Are we killing patriotism? That anybody can just get up, make allegations upon allegations, and people who go across the country – at times 48 hours without sleep, just to keep the country at peace - will be called to come and answer allegations that are unfounded?"
Nevertheless, he expressed his willingness to participate in the hearing, motivated by his respect for all those associated with him, the State and President Akufo-Addo, who appointed him to the position.
The IGP was flanked by his lawyers and a team of top police officials who had accompanied him to the hearing.
On Sunday, the chairman of the committee, Samuel Atta Akyea had indicated that the hearing would be done in-camera.
He insisted that there were issues in the hearing that needed to be prevented from coming out in the public to protect national security.
But this modality changed today as parts of the probe will be done publicly.
