Drains along the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange on the Circle-Kaneshie portion on the Ring Road, have chocked with sand and plastic waste.
Some of them also have been taken over by weeds while there appears to be no plan to desilt them as the rains are here.
The situation around at the terminal of the State Transport Company, Mechanical Lloyd and Stallion could best be described as a disaster waiting to happen.
However, another drain that receives water from the South Industrial Area which is also joined by a storm drain from Awudome Estate in front of the State Insurance Company’s Circle branch, is equally choked.
Silt up drains in major cities across the country have been identified as key contributory factors to perennial floods which often result in fatalities.
Unfortunately, we have not entered the rainy season yet but recent downpours that hit Accra and claimed at least 14 lives in within seven days have prompted the government to announce plans to dredge the Odaw River to avoid flooding.
The government intervention, as is seen around the Obetsebi-Lamptey Circle, suggests the focus is only on big drains as there is no such exercise in areas with small or medium drains which have the potential to cause devastating floods when it rains.
