The Peruvian Embassy in Ghana has celebrated the Peruvian-African Friendship Day.
The day is celebrated in October each year by Peruvians and all Peruvian missions across the African continent in commemoration of all persons who dedicated their lives to the emancipation of Africa. I
In addition, the celebration offers an opportunity to appreciate the historic bond connecting Peru and Africa.
Peruvian-African Friendship Day was instituted in 1986 following the death of the president and leader of Mozambique, Samora Machel, who is considered the father of Mozambique's independence. The Peruvian Embassy in Ghana, under the leadership of Ambassador Rosa Liliana Gomez de Weston was not left out of this year’s celebration.
The Embassy began the celebration with an interview on leading Ghanaian television station, Joy News, to highlight the current state of bilateral relationship between Peru and Ghana. The Ambassador further shared with the host, Benjamin Akakpo, strategic collaborations and cooperation in key sectors including commerce and economy, culture, gastronomic and tourism.
The celebration continued with a donation of educational and sanitary materials to the Flagstaff House Basic School in Accra. The main objective of the donation was to give back to the Ghanaian society, thus strengthening the relationship and friendship between Ghana and Peru.
The Embassy’s delegation was received by the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Obiri-Ansu and her team, as well as a team from the Ghana Armed Forces 5 Garrison Education Unit, Burma Camp.
The Ambassador reiterated that education is one of the most powerful tools for growth, empowerment, and social transformation and serves as the foundation upon which individuals build their futures and realize their dreams. In Peru, it is deeply valued as a medium to reduce inequality, promote sustainable development, and create opportunities for the next generation.
“Today, we are not just offering these supplies to support the learning of the young minds in this school. We are also reinforcing the commitment of Peru to strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation with Ghana and the African continent at large. Our shared history of resilience, creativity, and cultural richness makes us natural partners in the pursuit of progress and unity”, she emphasized.
She added that “by donating these educational materials, we hope to inspire and empower the students here to dream big and work hard. We believe that the future of Ghana, Africa, and indeed the world, rests in the hands of these young learners. It is our hope that they will grow to become the leaders, innovators, and changemakers who will shape a brighter tomorrow for all of us”.
To wrap up the celebration the Ambassador also donated Peruvian books to the Spanish Section of the Department of European Languages at the University of Ghana.
