Fifty-two persons with disabilities (PWDs) have received skill training to enable them to establish themselves and generate extra income for themselves.
The Amansie South District Assembly's two-day workshop introduced participants to pastry making in order to equip them with basic abilities.
It is also part of the assembly's efforts to guarantee that persons with disabilities are placed in very advantageous situations to sustain and maintain a comfortable existence.
The Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Sampson Yeboah urged participants to make effective use of the knowledge gained in order to reap the immense rewards.
"We expect them to make good use of the training, and when we go for monitoring and see that they are doing well, we will provide the additional support they require," Mr Yeboah added.
He stated that if beneficiaries do not make excellent use of the training, their condition will worsen, but making good use of it will bring better alleviation for them and their families.
Mr Yeboah stated that the training was funded by the District Common Fund, which was allotted to the PWDs.
According to him, the training would not be a one-time event, but the Assembly would continue to provide them with skills training in order to minimise dependency and boost economic growth in the area.
Through the training, he also used the opportunity to advise them on how to start their own enterprises.
Osei Gyimah Mathew, President of the Ghana Federation of Disability in the area, praised the district for providing such training to its members.
Osei was enthusiastic about the entire process and was confident that the recipients would put what they had learned to good use.
"It's an eye-opener, and we'd take advantage of it to reap the benefits."
He, however, appealed that the district common monies be distributed as soon as possible so that "we could be accredited."
