Some football enthusiasts have called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association to settle the outstanding bonuses owed players of the Black Stars to encourage an impressive participation in the 2010 World Cup.
Winning bonuses due the players after the World Cup in South Africa as well as the winning bonuses after the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland are still outstanding despite numerous promises from the sector ministry.
Listeners of Asempa FM's Fire-For-Fire sports programme, hosted by Patrick Osei Agyeman (Songo), expressed their disgust at the failure of government officials and football administrators in paying the bonuses of the gallant Black Stars who made Africa proud at the first world cup hosted on the continent.
It was reported in September that a number of players of the Black Stars threatened to pull out of the team’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan in Kumasi on October 10 if outstanding bonuses due them are not settled.
Caller after caller into the show kept asking officials to explain the delay in payments whilst others blamed the situation on administrative ineptitude. Others who expressed their disgust through text swore to take officials to task if something goes wrong with the weekend's clash with Sudan at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
It is still unclear why the Ministry of Youth and Sports has not paid the outstanding bills of the players since all bonuses are paid by the ministry.
