The Tepa circuit court in the Ahafo-Ano North district has fined a second-year Junior Secondary School (JSS) student nine million cedis or in default serve two years’ imprisonment for causing harm and stealing a mobile phone.
Mike Essien, alias Nana Yaw, 18, pleaded guilty to both charges, but the court, presided over by Mr. S.K.B. Alomatu, cautioned and discharged him on the stealing charge because the mobile phone was retrieved.
He was, however asked to pay four million cedis to the court and five million cedis as compensation to the complainant for causing harm.
Police Inspector Francis Asante told the court that on October 23, this year, at 1900 hours, the complainant, Miss Rita Asaka, an apprentice hairdresser was sitting behind her house at Tepa Zongo with her mobile phone valued at 2.5 million cedis.
He said Essien who had covered his face with a mask suddenly appeared and attacked the complainant and hit her with a stone on the forehead and snatched the mobile phone and bolted.
Inspector Asante said the complainant screamed and fell down unconscious but was saved by neighbours who rushed her to the hospital.
A tip-off led to the arrest of Essien and during a search in his room, the mobile phone was discovered in his pocket.
