Chairman of Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee is allaying fears of insecurity among the public.
According to Seth Acheampong, the state security agencies are already up to the task as far as the safety of the country is concerned.
This follows recent cases of robbery attacks resulting in the killing of the sitting Mfantseman MP, Ekow Quansah Hayford.
The latest being the police’s arrest of six people in connection with an alleged attempt to illegally import arms and ammunition into the country from Turkey.
The 436 pistols and 26 packs of ammunition consisting of 50 pieces each in a pack were found to have been concealed in personal effects made up of clothing, shoes and bags among other items in a 20-footer container.
Speaking to JoyNews, Mr Acheampong indicated that the importation of the arms, recent robbery cases and the secessionist attacks in the Volta region are high on their agenda as they meet security chiefs ahead of the polls.
"There are other pockets of armed robberies and other security infractions that have occurred during the period. Like I am standing in to offer assurances, I also need further assurance to be able to consolidate on what I know and what I have spoken about in respect of my contributions as I run around and do my business as a representative of state and a public servant,” he said on October 12.
The Chairman of Parliament’s Defense and Interior Committee further said the current happenings do not erode the work executed by the state security apparatus to keep the country safe.
“I must admit that when people face discomforted about recent events it is justified.
"However, I must admit that we are enjoying some safety and some security in our jurisdiction and I will maintain that those that have occurred do not necessarily erode the gains we have made,” he added.
