Mr. Kwabena Agyeman-Badu, Nkoranza District Director of Education, has advised parents with physically handicapped children not to hide them but to expose them so they could develop their God-given talents.
He said parents of such children should not blame God or attribute their birth to the work of evil forces “because our Creator knows whatever He has for every individual in the world”.
Mr. Agyeman-Badu was addressing the staff and parents at the launch of the 10th anniversary celebration of Nkoranza Shalom Special School for mentally handicapped children at the weekend.
He expressed concern about the attitude of some parents to hide such children, whom he said, “must rather be given the same love, care and special attention as to the normal children”.
The District Director commended the staff for accepting to serve in the school and for working hard to enhance its development for the past 10 years and urged them to maintain the spirit.
Mr. Godfrey Yupor, headmaster of the school disclosed that the institution was started with seven pupils but the population had increased to 210 and expressed gratitude to Dr Inneke Bossman and the District Directorate of Education for their support.
He said the school lacked adequate number of beds for the children and appealed to the District Assembly, District Directorate of Education and other stakeholders to assist.
Nana Amoa Gyare Baffo, Gyasehene of Nkoranza Traditional Area, who presided, urged parents of children in the school to pay regular visits to know their problems and also to encourage the teachers.
