Late President Prof. John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, than any other president did really show that he was father for all as he showed much love for the youth in Ekumfi Otuam and beyond. He is a kind of president that we will miss so much just for the good works he had in stock for us. We are therefore confused as to how, where and when we will get a president of his caliber.
It is with much sorrow that we the Otuam Youth Association (OYA) in Ekumfi Otuam are demanding that the body of our beloved and dearest father president J.E.A. Mills be brought to his hometown for an equally befitting and cultural burial.
We are therefore appealing to the government to consider the following suggestions/reasons why we are DEMANDING the body of the late president be buried here.
Culture
In our Akan culture, all indigenes of a town must be buried in their hometown when they pass on. The chiefs and elders would on every occasion/festival have to pour libation at the place of burial for all indigenes and this cannot be done in Accra when the festival is been celebrated in Ekumfi Otuam.
To be seen as Role Model
The youth association wants their father, uncle, our hope and everything to be buried in his hometown since it will serve as a kind of thing to learn from. It is obvious that the level of education of the people in Ekumfi Otuam is very low and we have the believe that when the president is buried here it will boast the moral of the youth to also learn very hard to reach the heights of the late president, it will also motivate the young ones who have chosen to only visit the sea; do something better to enrich their lives.
Previous Governments/Legacy
It can be recalled that all heads of state of the republic are buried in their respective hometowns; Dr. Liman, Akuffo Addo, Busia and even Dr. Kwame Nkrumah were all buried in their hometown. Even with the case of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, he was buried in his hometown and was later sent to Accra for a state burial since he was the first president of the republic of Ghana.
In our case president Mills was not a first President and we see no reason why he should be buried in Accra than his hometown.
Therefore, our father Mills, should also be buried in his hometown to fell the fertile soil here.
Tourist Attraction
We the Youth Association in Ekumfi Otuam strongly believe that when the body is buried here it will serve as tourist attraction and this we believe will help the town in many ways.
Income generation
We also believe that when the body is buried in Ekumfi Otuam, it will generate income to the community since people all over the world would want to pay visits to the last resting place of Ghana’s third president and donate generously to the community.
In this regard we believe that the community would develop through the donations that would come from visitors.
Community Recognition
Once again the Youth have the opinion that the community will be recognized locally and internationally when the late president is buried in Ekumfi Otuam because the community currently does not have recognition in Ghana and beyond.
Sincerely,
Joseph Ansaful Mensah
Youth President
Otuam Youth Association
