The National Service Secretariat (NSS) has announced the posting of more than 9000 newly trained nurses to health facilities across the country.

The nurses are expected to undertake their mandatory service for the 2019/2020 service year; beginning April 8, 2019.

In a statement, the NSS urged “all the posted nurses to accept their placements and consider them as part of their contribution towards building a prosperous Ghana.”

“All eligible Nurses who registered for National Service are kindly requested to log onto the NSS website, www.nss.gov.gh to check their placements and then proceed to the various NSS Registration Centres to complete their registration processes,” the statement added.

The NSS in its statement also released the procedure that prospective personnel are to follow to register for the programme.

Nurses protest over unemployment

While the NSS postings may come to the newly trained nurses as a temporary source of engagement, their predecessors are continuously engaged in a media war with the government over unemployment.

A 10-day ultimatum by a group of privately trained nurses to the government for evidence of their employment processing expired on Friday.

Bonded nurses

The nurses who have idled at home for more than four years promised a mega demonstration, similar to the infamous kumiprɛko demonstration staged in 1995 to protest the Valued Added Tax.

The demonstration led to injuries of scores and the death of others.

Besides these nurses, scores of other organised groups of unemployed nurses have staged protest marches in the capital, Accra.

In September 2018, unemployed nurses staged protest marches simultaneously in six regional capitals to emphasize their anger.

The government has, however, assured the nurses that it is working fervently to ensure they are all employed.
