Alex King Nartey, a member of the Public Relations Department of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has revealed that most of the fire tenders that were out of commission have been restored and are now operational at various stations.
According to him, the service's ability to respond to fires has significantly improved, and they hope for further enhancements.
“The situation has improved greatly, but we hope to acquire new appliances,” he said.
He added, “Over 80% of our fire tenders are back on the roads, and our Chief and regional commanders are working tirelessly to ensure the rest are also back in operation. We have made tremendous progress in getting the fire tenders that were out of commission back on the road, the Abelemkpe station was out of commission, but it’s back; Amansaman was out of commission, but it’s back; Circle is back, and our Korle Bu station is also back in service,” King Nartey said.
He said this in an interview with Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, 18th November, with Sweety Aboagye.
In October, a report by JoyNews, obtained through the Right to Information Law (RTI), revealed that the country has only 248 fire tenders to serve a population of 30.8 million people.
The report, led by JoyNews editor Fred Smith, disclosed that out of the 248 fire tenders, only 155 were functioning, while 133 were out of commission across various regions.

Mr Nartey advised the general public to adhere to fire safety precautions as the dry season approaches.
New data from the GNFS also reveals that 4,650 fire outbreaks were recorded between January and September 2024.
