Over 3,000 Tema steel workers face job loss

Over 3,000 workers of four major steel companies in Tema are at risk of losing their jobs owing to rising electricity tariff. The workers say their companies have served notice that they could be laid off by the end of the year because of the high electricity tariffs. The companies – Tema Steel, Special Steel, Ferro Fabrik and Western Casting – are reportedly struggling under the burden of the recent electricity tariff hikes. The workers are asking the government to intervene to help save their jobs. Chairman of the Local union at Tema Steel said the hikes in electricity tariffs “have already [created] a lot of difficulties for management and now they are threatening to lay us off.” When that happens, he said, there will be serious implications for the economy and the nation at large. “When we go home, dependants will lose, eventually this country is going to lose because the products that come out of the steel industries will now be imported and when that happens the price will increase and the domestic consumer will be affected."
