Anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu says the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) should not take more than a day to determine whether an extortion allegation involving the Minority Leader falls within its statutory mandate.

His comments follow the OSP’s decision to review the allegations of extortion and related conduct made by the Chief Executive of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, against the Minority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to establish whether it has the legal authority to investigate the matter.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, August 24, Mr Senanu said the OSP’s initial assessment should be completed quickly, given the nature of the allegation.

"That shouldn't take them more than a day. So strictly speaking, if they want to give us some information, I would expect that by tomorrow [Tuesday] OSP should get back to us, at the latest Wednesday, to say yes, this is within our mandate or not, and this is how we're going to proceed," he said.

According to Mr Senanu, the OSP’s swift response to the allegation is a positive sign, particularly after months of limited public activity amid legal challenges involving the office.

Mr Senanu urged the OSP to provide clarity on the matter promptly to prevent prolonged uncertainty surrounding the allegation.
