Banks and financial institutions are increasingly devising ways to outdo each other in the face of growing competition.
After SG-SSB launched its bank in a box concept, another financial institution has introduced a creative way of reaching out to the unbanked population.
The “mobile branch” concept from Opportunity International Bank is a typical bank branch except that it is mounted on wheels and so can be moved around.
“It is more like a brick and mortar branch that is on wheel. So we take the whole branch to the community. It will be manned by three people; two tellers and one customer service person,” Head of Delivery Channel Jonathan Cato told Joy Business.
“They will be able to do all other things that a brick and mortar branch will be able to offer.
He said they will move to rural communities where there is no banking services, operate for a day and move to another community.
“In that one day the van will move from one point to another in that same community until we saturate the place. Once that is done it moves from that community to another,” he said.
