A key member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Opare Addo, has criticised the government's "One Village, One Dam" initiative.
According to him, the policy is ineffective suggesting that aquaculture would have been a better approach with government introducing the One District, One Pond policy.
Speaking at the Political Parties Dialogue on the Fisheries Sector, he said this would have led to the creation of over 260 fish ponds across Ghana, providing each district with a reliable and cheaper source of fish.
“When this government came into office and said One Village, One Dam maybe it was a small mistake it should have been one fish pond, one district. We would have been counting over 260 fish ponds in this country and every district in Ghana will be having fish which is far cheaper than what will be coming from the coast,” he indicated on Tuesday, September 17.
Mr Addo argued that cultivating fish in ponds on land is more economical and efficient than fishing at sea, as it avoids the high fuel costs associated with marine fishing.
He highlighted that fish can be harvested from ponds within four to five hours, making the process quicker and more sustainable.
He also questioned the effectiveness of the dams promised by the government, claiming many of them have dried up and are not serving their intended purpose.
“Where are the dams now? If it would have been fish ponds and it is so big, I tell you even our schools in the various districts will even be having fish,” he added.
In addition, Mr Addo noted that if the CPP is voted for, they would ensure foreign vessels fishing in Ghana’s waters would be seized.
