Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says the incumbent government's ‘one-village, one-dam’ project is a waste of national resources.
The former President has also described the project as ‘one-village, one pond’ and said each dam is a ‘duck pond’.
"When we were in office, we were building the Tamni irrigation dam, we didn't finish before we left. And after we left office, that project has come to a standstill. That project was supposed to irrigate 3000 hectares of land for dry season irrigation farming.
"Instead, they went and started digging one village one pond. Those little ponds that ducks swim in they call dams - a complete waste of government resources. What our people are looking for is viable dams that can provide water throughout the year so that they can engage in dry season irrigation farming and gardening," he said.
Mr. Mahama made these comments during an engagement with residents of Bawku in the Upper East Region on Monday, where he noted that paramount among his party's intentions for the community is facilitating the creation of sources of employment for its youth.
He also reiterated NDC's 2016 campaign promises to construct a new district hospital for the community, as well as what he calls a 'mini-Kejetia market' and ensure that all roads in the district are asphalted.
"We are coming with the Big Push, and this is going to build hospitals, roads and electricity, water, schools, expand our airports, and put in the social infrastructure that will make Ghana's economy take off," he added.
The NDC flagbearer is currently on day two of his three-day campaign tour of the Upper East Region where he paid courtesy calls on the Tongraan, Nab Kugbilsong Nalebegtang, the chiefs and people of Gambibgo and Sherigu in the Bolgatanga East and Central Constituencies.
He is also expected to sympathise with the families of the late Bishop Jacob Ayeebo, a former Member of the Council of State, and Faisal Anaba, a former Deputy Upper East Regional Minister at Zebilla in the Bawku West District.
