Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the leaders of the Democracy Hub protest, is reported to have absconded, leaving his fellow demonstrators stranded.
The Constitutional Rights and Policy Advisor of Democracy Hub was captured in a video that has gone viral turning off the engine of a police van, taking the key and running away with them.
The police have intensified efforts to apprehend him for his alleged involvement in unlawful activities during the demonstration.
The protest, which saw demonstrators blocking roads and disrupting traffic, led to the arrest of several individuals by the police.
While tensions heightened, Mr Barker-Vormawor reportedly fled the scene, abandoning the others.
His supposed disappearance has left many protesters confused and frustrated as he was a major instigator of the activity.
The police have since launched a manhunt for Barker-Vormawor, calling on the public to assist with any information that may lead to his arrest.
Meanwhile, the Democracy Hub protesters are facing mounting pressure as law enforcement continues to clamp down on their activities.
The three-day protest is expected to come to an end today, Monday.Despite this state of affairs, Mr Barker-Vormawor claims he has been in touch with the police and has not absconded.
In a statement, the police claimed that Barker-Vormawor was evading arrest, but he firmly denied these accusations through a Facebook post, stating that there had been no attempt to avoid law enforcement.
The activist also criticised the police's narrative, emphasising his continued cooperation with authorities and disputing the need for a manhunt.
"In light of these developments, I have instructed my lawyers to urgently engage with the Ghana Police Service to seek clarification on which specific police station or office they wish me to report to. My legal team stands ready to cooperate and will be in touch with the relevant authorities to ascertain the appropriate steps required."
