OICI expands projects in Ghana

As part of plans to expand its projects and humanitarian assistance in the country, Opportunities Industrialization Center International (OICI), a non-governmental organization, is to raise $10 million for that purpose. OICI says it intends raising this money through donors such as Newmont, Goldfields Ghana Limited, Anglogold Ashanti and USAID. Part of the proceeds would also be used by the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) to establish the 'OIC Campus of Excellence' at East Legon, a suburb of Accra. Work on the centre is expected to commence soon and it will be a modern, state-of-the-art vocational training and recreational facility for the youth. Carla Dominique Denizard, Country Representative of OICI, made this known at its "2nd Corporate Social Responsibility Seminar" in Accra Tuesday. The seminar themed, "Doing Good and Stimulating Business in Ghana", was organized to help various establishments in the country to be able to well define corporate social responsibility and its benefits to both a company and the community. In her presentation, Carla Dominique Denizard stated that her outfits' objective in the country was to help improve the quality of life and economic opportunities of the people. "$6.5 million was invested in our community development programmes in the country, Which ensured that 61,572 people's quality of life and economic opportunities were improved last year", she said. The World Business Council for Development defines corporate social responsibility as "The continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large." To achieve the tenets of this definition, Dr. Josiah Cobbah, Executive Director of OIC Ghana, advised companies in the country to incorporate social responsibility programmes into their vision, mission, business plans and budgets. "Companies should identify focus areas like health, water, micro-financing and in so doing target groups like the youth, women and others to achieve your goal," he stated. OICI is an NGO headquartered in Philadelphia, USA. The subsidiary in the country is OIC Ghana, with its mission being to improve the quality of life of low income and disadvantaged society. Since 1970 it has trained thousands of least-educated and mostly deprived people and implemented developmental projects in all 10 regions of Ghana. Source: Daily Guide
