The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) have suspended Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey for three months following his poor performance in the World Cup qualifier clash between South Africa and Senegal, widespread media reports have claimed.
The experience referee was guilty of awarding a controversial penalty to South Africa to aid them record a 2-1 win over Senegal at Peter Mokaba Stadium Polokwane.
Senegal lodged an official protest with CAF over the performance of the referee and CAF are said to have taken a decision to punish the FIFA referee.
"The FCA informs that its Board of Arbitration has decided to suspend referee Lamptey for 3 months, and has therefore being excluded from the next AFCON in Gabon.," the FSF communicated
"It also confirms that it will continue to act and punish defaulters referees while continuing to work on their training. "A recognition that the Ghanaian, who had refereed a match the previous CAN, has made a poor copy."
Senegal, who dominated the match were outdone by Lamptey when he awarded a clearly doubtful and suspicious penalty that propelled Bafana Bafana to summit of Group D.
