The Chairman of the Odododiodioo Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has asked the Electoral Commission to ensure a credible voters’ register for the area in order to make results of this year's elections acceptable to all.
Speaking at an emergency executive meeting of the NDC in Accra on Friday, Mr. Daniel Okai said information reaching the constituency office of the party indicated that an unnamed political party had planned to transport people from other places to register when the exercise begins on July 31, 2008 to enable them to vote in the area.
He warned that members of the NDC in the area were "wild awake" and would challenge attempts to register non-residents in the area.
"Since elections have to do with residents that are captured on registration forms it will be untenable for anybody or group of persons to register people who do not reside in the area to enable them to vote in the constituency", he said.
The Constituency Organiser, Mr. Samuel Armah, advised the unnamed party to desist from the "alleged" intended action for the sake of peace since members of the NDC in the area would challenge any non-resident who would attempt to register in the constituency.
Mr. Joseph Otoo, Constituency Secretary, pointed out that the register for the area already contained names of non-residents because of the fact that there were 10 markets in the area for which reason people from all walks of life flooded the vicinity daily to transact business and had registered there erroneously.
He said efforts were being made to get the names of such people off the register and stated that the situation should not be compounded by registering more people who not reside in the constituency.
Mr. Otoo held that Odododiodioo is a “no go zone" for any other party other than the NDC. "No matter what they do the NDC will retain the seat", he added.
