Though the opposition New Patriotic Party is yet to take proper stock as to why the party lost the December general elections, some party members continue to indicate their interest in some key positions.
But in the case of who leads the NPP in 2012 as a presidential candidate, many grass-root supporters and some influential party members have stated their preference for the retention of Nana Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate for Election 2008, for the next general elections.
Mike Ocquaye, Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya who doubles as the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and Nyaho Nyaho¬Tamakloe, immediate past Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, are two leading members of the NPP who have just added their voices to the call to retain Nana Akufo-Addo as the party's flag bearer for the next national polls.
The duo contended that the NPP standard bearer for the 2008 elections remains "the most popular politician in the country today."
They were speaking separately at the thanksgiving service organised by Prof Ocquaye at Taifa, Accra, to thank his constituents for voting for him last year to retain his seat as the MP for the area.
According to Prof. Ocquaye, "Nana Addo's name has become a household name in every nook and cranny of the country."
He maintained that NPP would have the opportunity to come back to power if the party retained Nana Addo as its presidential candidate for 20 12.
He, however, appealed to the party faithful to remain committed and loyal to the party and gave the assurance that with Nana Akufo-¬Addo as the party's flag bearer, NPP would surely win the next general elections.
According to the NPP constitution, it is expected that the party goes to congress in 2010 to elect its flag bearer.
Other leading members such as Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Kofi Konadu Apraku had made similar propositions after last year's elections.
During his "thank you" tour of the regional capitals and some major towns in the country, Nana Akufo-Addo told the NPP supporters to stop the blame game regarding the reason why the party lost the December polls, encouraging them to remain united.
Wherever Nana visited, many supporters called for his retention as the party's presidential candidate for 20 12.
Dr Tamakloe said he would do all he could to ensure that Nana Addo won the 2012 polls, and urged the party supporters to remain united and work towards victory in the next general elections.
