The mining town of Obuasi and Bulsa city in the Namentenga Province of the Central North Region of Burkina Faso, on Tuesday signed a temporary agreement to begin sister cities friendly relations.
The agreement followed a visit to Obuasi on Monday by a four-man delegation led by Jean Sawadogo, Mayor of Bulsa city. Mr. Joseph Kwadwo Boampong, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, signed on behalf of citizens of Obuasi whilst Mayor Sawadogo initialed on behave of Bulsa people.
The formal agreement to cement the partnership would take place after a delegation from Obuasi had also visited Bulsa for the necessary arrangements towards the finalisation of the deal. The agreement recognized Obuasi as the hub of gold mining in Ghana, which was gradually becoming an important tourist attraction and Bulsa as an important agricultural settlement with a long history dating more than 500 years.
It said "sister cities programme permits citizens of both communities to participate in international relation as well as cultural exchanges in such fields as art, music, youth programmes, education, trade and other areas of mutual interests." The two cities further expressed the desire to promote inter personal relationship and understanding between the people of Obuasi and Bulsa.
Both cities finally pledged full co-operation in fostering a growing friendship between the citizens of the two cities and Ghana and Bukina Faso.
Mayor Sawadogo told the members of the Municipal Assembly that the signing of the temporary agreement was as a result of initial partnership between the Ashanti Region and Central North Region of Burkina Faso.
He said the signing of the agreement demonstrated the willingness of the people of the two cities to forge peace and work together. Mayor Sawadogo appealed to the members to work together, saying "you are builders of Obuasi and Ghana."
