The National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS), since its inception in 1965 has done everything within its capacity to frustrate student groups from seeing demonstration as the only means of settling internal skirmishes. However students are left with no other option than to see the streets as a more luring alternative.
It is with this background that, though regrettable, the National Union of Ghana Students’ (NUGS) sees the unresponsive attitude of Government and the University officials as very worrisome warranting all manner of actions from students including public protest.
The intended demonstration by students of University of Ghana tomorrow Tuesday, 18 October, 2011 is a direct result of the reticence of some major stakeholders of our educational system inter alia Government, National Council for Tertiary Education and Vice Chancellor-Ghana as far as the plight of First year students to fourth year students in the school is concerned.
On this day, NUGS solidarizes with the students of University of Ghana and would want to assure them that the mother union shares with them in this difficult time and shall stand with them any day.
We therefore, caution the students to be peaceful by respecting the laws in this land governing such public protests.
NUGS however, want to use this occasion to appeal genuinely-humbly to the Ghanaian populace on some heart-racking and sensitive issues on the Legon campus such as;
• The lack of accommodation facility for some level 100 students on campus who have paid a whooping sum of amount for their accommodation.
• Some security challenges the decongestion policy has brought on them.
• Astronomical increase in this academic year’s fees among other things.
Aluta Continua…Victoria ascerta.
May God bless us all
