The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Thursday, August 6, stage its planned nationwide demonstration dubbed “Democracy Under Attack”, as the party raises concerns over what it describes as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance.

The protest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. at the Supreme Court and end at the Jubilee House, according to promotional materials released by the party.

Organisers are mobilising supporters under the hashtags #DemocracyUnderAttack, #SaveGhanaNow and #SayNoToStateCapture.

The NPP has said the demonstration is intended to draw attention to issues including alleged restrictions on free expression, concerns over the treatment of opposition voices and what it describes as threats to democratic institutions.

In a Facebook post, spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and NPP communications team member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, said the protest is aimed at resisting what he described as attempts to suppress dissent and undermine democratic values.

“There is always the temptation by people in power to suppress the voices and rights of the people. But there is an inherent self-purge with democracy. Try as you may, you can never suppress the will of the people,” he wrote.

Mr Aboagye further alleged that issues such as what he described as “rampant arrests of opposition voices”, the detention of some individuals over alleged insults, the arrest of TikTok users and media practitioners, the use of bail conditions, and concerns about the relationship between the Executive and the Judiciary pose a threat to Ghana’s democracy.

He called for equal application of the law and urged authorities to avoid what he termed selective justice.

“Let's stop the selective justice now before it becomes a cycle. Power is like ice.... Live and let's live... that’s the beauty of democracy,” he added.

The NPP maintains that the demonstration is to defend civil liberties, the rule of law and democratic accountability.

The government, however, has rejected claims of targeting political opponents, insisting that state institutions operate independently and that law enforcement actions are guided by due process.
