The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Salam Mustapha, has apologised to Prof. Ransford Gyampo after levelling several allegations of malfeasance against him.
Mustapha now says his accusations against the respected academic are unfounded as he has no evidence to back them.
He had accused Gyampo of collaborating with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to influence student voting by using the recent University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) strike as a tactic.
Additionally, Mustapha accused Prof. Gyampo of seeking a political appointment under an NDC government and of having a negative international reputation tied to allegations of misconduct with students.
However, Mustapha has formally retracted these allegations, acknowledging the defamatory nature of his claims.
In a retraction issued Friday, he admitted that he has no evidence to support his accusations and has issued an unreserved apology to Prof. Gyampo.
"Lawyers for Prof. Gyampo have since engaged me, drawing my attention to the defamatory nature of the contents of my Press Release," Mr. Mustapha stated. "Given that I have no evidence to back the allegations I made against Prof. Gyampo, I hereby retract and render an unqualified apology to him."
