General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indicated his party’s readiness to ensure that activities of the LGBTQ community are clamped down on.
According to John Boadu, even though his party is keen on protecting the rights of minorities in the country, activities of the group in question won’t be tolerated.
"The NPP will not support the activities of the LGBTQI+ community," he said.
This comes in the wake of debates surrounding the controversial Anti-LGBTQ bill.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, if passed, will criminalise lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and related sexual relations and advocacy for same.
Speaking at the Eastern Regional Delegates Conference, Mr Boadu explained that "we respect the rights of the individuals but cannot support actions that are against our principles.”
He further questioned why some Ghanaians are asking the NPP to state their position on the controversy over the bill before Parliament.
Addressing delegates on October 17, John Boadu further alleged that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) tradition promotes the rights of those in the LGBTQI+ community.
“So don’t ask us whether we accept LGBTQI or not; we are not supposed to be asked that question. The right people to ask that question are NDC members because they are Center-Left political party,” Mr Boadu insisted on Sunday, October 18.
