The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Nii Lai Parker, has refuted claims by parliamentary candidate Roni Kwesi Nicol that his opponent, Ursula Owusu-Ekufful, is breaching party rules.
Mr Nicol claimed that Mrs Owusu-Ekufful's supporters are camping some delegates and denying others access to the accreditation process.
In response to these allegations, Mr Parker rejected them as false and baseless.
“Yesterday [Friday], for instance, I met all the aspirants. I met the constituency executives and I gave them a warning that there should be no camping. If you are making big allegations like this, I am expecting that you support your allegations with evidence. If someone is talking about camping, the question is, where are they being camped,” he stressed.
Mr Parker explained that under the party's rules, certain officials are permitted to observe the primary elections and cannot be barred from doing so.
According to him, there was never any discussion about preventing party officials from observing the primary.
“That is why you will see some former officers coming to observe. So he has no case at all. He is talking about Christian home that people are being camped in. Christian home is our meeting grounds. That is where we do meet.”
“There is no camping in Ablekuma West. I met all of them yesterday [Friday] and I gave a strong signal even to the Minister of Communication that I will not entertain any camping, so these are serious fabrications.”
However, one delegate from Mr Nicol's team claimed that the incumbent MP for Ablekuma West was bribing delegates and preventing them from casting their votes.
“She should stop what she is doing and allow the people to come and vote because when the time is up, no one will be permitted to vote again,” he said.
Background
There was tension in the Ablekuma West constituency as supporters of one of the contenders, Roni Kwesi Nicol, alleged that they were facing accreditation challenges at the gate.
Supporters of Roni claimed that the incumbent MP and Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekufful was responsible for the situation, with accusations that she is involved in the accreditation process at the Christian Home School, where her PA was allegedly distributing accreditation to delegates.
