NPP: Police, EC to blame

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said that it will hold the police responsible for any act of violence that will befall its party agents in the Volta Region. The party accused the police of not doing enough to protect its party agents who were being chased away by both Electoral Commission (EC) Presiding Officers and operatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). At a news conference yesterday to register their complaints, the Campaign Chairman of the party, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, said "the police in the Volta Region have much to answer if any further injury should befall our innocent citizens going about their lawful activity." He cited South Dayi, Keta, North Tongu, South Tongu and Anlo as some of the constituencies where the party's accredited agents had been refused and chased away by the presiding officers. Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey said the refusal to accept their agents would not enable them to monitor and "endorse any declared results". The NPP further accused the NDC of intimidating their supporters with violence in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions and urged the Election Security Task Force to beef up their presence in the regions. He said there had been incidents at Ejusi-Juaben, Weija, Okaikoi-North, Manhyia and Kwabre East constituencies and called in the police to stop "all gangs especially motor bicycle gangs from continuing their terror tactics." Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey urged all supporters of the party to stand up for democracy and defend themselves. He also condemned the ethnic sentiments being whipped up by the NDC, leading to attacks on non-Ewes in the Volta Region. "We call on Ghanaians who have the nation at heart to condemn utterly these behaviours of the NDC which put the progress and wellbeing of our country at risk," he appealed.
