The Asuogyaman constituency of the Eastern region has been turned into a fierce battle field for political supremacy by New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirants.
The Asuogyaman seat which was held by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) until the year 2004, is being hotly contested by two NPP aspirants, one is the incumbent.
The seat which is currently occupied by Kofi Osei Ameyaw, who is also deputy Minister of Tourism, is being contested by Mr. Paul Asare-Ansah.
Mr. Paul Asare-Ansah is the Regional representative of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
Mr. Ansah says he has garnered enough support to contest and win the primaries. He told Joy News that the constituents of Asuogyaman are dissatisfied with the performance of the incumbent.
He said in spite of the resources that the constituency is endowed with, it is often referred to as a ‘deprived’ community.
He claims that he has studied the political history of Asuogyaman and can tell that the problem of the constituency is one of leadership.
Mr. Ansah said he believes his intervention can bring the change that the people are yearning for.
When asked how he could unseat Mr. Osei Ameyaw who is said to have grassroots support, he said, that perception does not exist because there is no such grassroots support for Mr. Ameyaw. He added that indeed, the grassroots people are saying if he is re-elected to represent the NPP, they would vote ‘skirt and blouse’, because ever since he was elected it has been “politics of deceit, broken promises and shattered dreams.”
'Skirt and blouse' is the phenomena of voting for a party's presidential candidate and as a sign of protest the parliamentary candidate of another party is voted for.
He also accused his opponent of practicing politics of “unfulfilled promises and boastful arrogance.”
But when Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw was contacted, he declined to comment.
The primaries is scheduled for May 2008.
