The efforts by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) executive members in the Prestea/Huni Valley constituency to campaign for votes, suffered a major set back on Tuesday, when they were attacked by suspected armed robbers at Nsusaden, near Bogoso.
In the ensuing melee, two pick-up vehicles with registration numbers GE 3969 Z and GW 8630 V that they were using were seized from them at gunpoint, in addition to GH¢5000 cash and a mobile phone that the chairman, Ibrahim Amoako was holding.
Under attack were Mr Vandyke Osei Owusu, Secretary, Madam Cecilia Gyamfuaa, Women Organiser and Marshal Obeng the Youth Organiser.
Mr. Amoako, who initially refused to hand over his car keys, was mercilessly beaten resulting in his right hand been injured.
After receiving one slap on his cheek, Osei Owusu humbly handed over the keys to one of the pick-ups that he was driving to the robbers.
Narrating the incident to The Chronicle on Saturday, Mr Amoako said the executives were visiting communities in the constituency to meet supporters of the party and to distribute NPP flags and posters of the Party's Presidential aspirant, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, when the incident occurred.
He said, a party meeting was held in Sekondi-Takoradi on 29th June, 2008, where it was resolved that the petty squabbles which characterised the primary were over and it was time for them to burry their differences and forge ahead in unity, to win the impending elections.
Because of this, Mr Amoako said the first batch of six Tata pick-ups were distributed to Ahanta West, Evalue Gwira, Prestea/Huni-Valley, Aowin, Bia and Juaboso constituencies to facilitate their campaigning.
He said, in line with the decision taken at the meeting, the constituency executives started working, adding communities like Boppo, Koduakrom, Amoanda, Obengkrom, Damang and Pemeso which had earlier been visited.
When getting closer to Nsusaden at about 5pm, on Tuesday, Mr Amoako said a taxi crossed their vehicles and five men armed with pistols ordered them to hand over the car keys. He said, he initially resisted but the robbers twisted his hand to collect the keys.
According to Addo, the organiser, after receiving a slap, handed over the keys to them.
The robbers drove the vehicles away, leaving their stranded victims in the middle of the road. The case has since been reported to the Tarkwa police, who have started investigations.
