Awudu Yusif, 35, said to be the main architect of the activities of the notorious armed robber, Aryee Ayeetey, also known as Ataa Ayi, has been arrested by the police at Asawasi, a suburb of Kumasi, just hours after he sneaked back into the country.
A police team, led by Chief Inspector Osei Agyemang, at about 10 am arrested him on Monday at a popular washing bay near the Airport Roundabout.
Yusif, also known as "Director", was said to have escaped to Niger when Atta Ayi was arrested. He returned to Ghana on Monday and was arrested upon a tip-off.
The Asawasi District Police Commander was not available yesterday to comment on the story but a source there did.
According to the source, Yusif claimed he had known Ataa Ayi for some six years and together they had engaged in many armed robberies in some parts of the country. He claimed that he lived in Accra with him during that period.
Ataa Ayi shot into the public eye when he was arrested in March 2005.
Yusif, who is in the custody of the Asawasi Police, is still being investigated and he is believed to have given the police some leads into criminal activities in the country.
