No need to change tactics – Coach Milovan

Milovan Rajevac will carry on with his favourite 4-3-2-1 tactic against USA on Saturday despite Ghana's goal drought from the three group matches in the World Cup. The Serbian is also unlikely to depart from the approach which tasks Asamoah Gyan as the lone striker in the hunt for goals. The Serbian coach Thursday strongly defended his tactical formation which critics cite for Ghana's inability to score more than one goal per match, with two well-taken spot kicks propelling the Stars to the second-round of South Africa 2010. The last time Rajevac's side scored more than a goal in a competitive game was the 2010 World Cup qualifier against Mali which ended 2-2 in Kumasi on November 15, last year. At the 20 10 Africa Cup of nations in Angola, Ghana scored a goal each against Burkina Faso, Angola and Nigeria before losing to Egypt in the final. Rajevac, who is nonetheless concerned about his team's conversion rate, not only considers the 4-3-2-1 formation as the most progressive, especially at such high 'levels, but rather blames his frontline men for failing to utilise the many chances they create in matches. "I think that top teams such as Germany and Brazil are playing that formation. It's the best formation now and it suits our strength," the Serbian said at a press briefing. "During matches we adapt to situations and change when things are not going well. With the 4-4-2 formation that people seem to like, you have two strikers going straight at the opponent’s centre-backs and this situation leaves problems in midfield. Such a formation at the World Cup could leave you in trouble against fast and tough sides," he explained. "At training, we experiment so that we can have four players in the penalty box when we launch an attack, but such situations don’t always happen in matches." In diagnosing Ghana's poor conversion rate during matches, the Stars trainer indicated that his players sometimes tend to hold onto the ball for too long. "Sometimes we have too many touches in our build-up. We need to be quicker with the build-up and with fewer touches". Rajevac said in tomorrow's game it was important that his team scored "a proper goal" and promised to work with the players to correct the problem. "It's a World Cup and football is at its highest quality. I am satisfied with the chances we create although the finishing is lacking. However, I'm optimistic it is going to change against the USA."
