The National Media Commission is accusing the Minister for Public Sector Reform of blackmailing the board and management of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.
A statement from the NMC and signed by its Chairman, Mr Paul Adu-Gyamfi, said the sector Minister, Dr Nduom wants the board to ignore the constitution and follow what it calls his self pursuit over the future of the organization.
The statement said Dr Nduom proclaimed that government can close down GBC without consulting the NMC, in a speculative hypothesis at a public function.
The Commission said it is committed to a legitimate and transparent process that will improve conditions of service. However it insists the process should be carried out in a transparent manner and by a lawful authority.
According to the Commission, Dr Nduom’s conduct undermines the Constitution. It has therefore asked government to call the minister to order.
However, Dr Nduom told Joy News he is surprised at the tone of the statement.
“The language here is one thing I had hoped I wouldn’t read from the NMC. The restructuring of GBC didn’t start with the NPP administration…it was prior to 2001, so it is not a Dr Nduom project…I don’t want to get into any unnecessary battle of words with anyone,” he said.
He denied threatening to close down GBC down. “I don’t have that mandate. And I don’t wish to have that mandate. I have not said that anywhere.”
Dr Nduom advised the NMC to use the appropriate authority to address their grievances.
