The Nigeria Football Federation has given itself a clean bill of health in the recent dip in the fortunes of the country’s football and claimed Nigerian coaches should be held responsible instead.
First Vice President of the Federation, Mike Umeh said the football house had done everything necessary to see that the various national teams succeeded but their recurring failure in achieving such result was beyond the comprehension of the federation.
“We are not the problem,” Umeh said, adding that recent events tended to absolve the football house of blame.
“You can see that coaches have started resigning on their own volition. It shows that the NFF is not to blame. The board does not play football. We have done everything that was required of us by providing the enabling environment like giving the teams the best training camps as well as a free hand to run their teams; but the teams failed,”he said, asking, “what could we have done in such circumstances?”
He described the resignation of coach Austin Eguavoen as “a good omen for Nigerian football.”
He disclosed that the situation had called for immediate action regarding the appointment of a technical director which he added was the immediate task for the executive board of the federation. He said, “It has become apparent that we need a technical director and I promise you that by January one will be named.”
Umeh praised the federal government for awarding a N360 million worth of contract for a befitting secretariat for the NFF, saying “when you work in a conducive environment it will bring the best of your administrative competence and it enhances productivity. It is a very good project that has been long overdue.”
