A Nigerian national has been arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) for illegally acquiring a Ghanaian voter’s ID and attempting to enter Ghana illegally.
A voter ID card with identification number 2314005429 was found on Emmanuel Philip during a body search after his arrest at the Aflao main border.
A statement signed by the Officer In-charge of the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer of the Service, Felix Klu-Adjei, indicated that the suspect confessed in a written statement.
Mr Philip is reported to have said that a Ghanaian couple - Jerry Azametsi and Abigail Togbor Azametsi - living at Aflao guaranteed for him to acquire the voter’s ID card.
Mr Azametsi who was subsequently invited and he confirmed his role in the illegality.
He added that he convinced the prime suspect to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise and apply for the ID card.
The suspect further confirmed that Mr Philip is a Nigerian friend who lives in Togo, but occasionally visits him in Ghana.
“The Aflao Sector Command of the GIS has since handed over the prime suspect and his two guarantors to the Aflao District Police for further investigation and subsequent prosecution,” he stated.
In a related development, some seven Togolese arrested for illegally entering into Ghana have been handed over to Togolese authorities following completion of their 14-days mandatory Covid-19 quarantine.
