The National Identification Authority (NIA) has stated that over 18 million Ghanaians have been registered and now hold Ghana cards.

The NIA is responsible for creating, maintaining, and promoting the use of national identity cards in Ghana, aims to register all Ghanaians, including those living abroad, by 2030.

In an interview with JoyNews to mark International Identification Day, the NIA’s Corporate Affairs Officer, Theodie Addo-Dankwah, stated that the organisation is now expanding its efforts to register Ghanaians living in the United States and Canada, following the successful registration of over 18 million citizens.

"We have registered more than 18 million Ghanaians. The NIA's mandate as an institution is to register Ghanaians living in Ghana and abroad. It is also responsible for registering foreign nationals who are resident in the country beyond the period of non-residence. This is currently ongoing," she added.

Mrs Addo-Dankwah stated that the NIA is on track to achieve its goal of providing legal identity for all Ghanaians by 2030, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which promotes legal identity for all, including birth registration.

She noted that, as of 2024, 18 million Ghanaians have already been registered, making the 2030 target attainable.

Mrs Addo-Dankwah also emphasised the urgent need for all Ghanaians to complete their registration with the NIA.
