The National Identification Authority (NIA) says the ongoing Ghana Card registration in Pusiga District is “lawful, proper, necessary, and wholly wholesome,” dismissing claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of political motivation.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC's Director of Elections and IT, alleged in a Facebook post that the registration exercise in Pusiga was a politically driven initiative disguised as a collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
He accused the NIA of trying to aid illegal voters in the final phase of the voter registration process.
However, in a statement released on Wednesday, May 22, the NIA refuted these allegations, emphasising its commitment to providing accurate identification for vulnerable populations, particularly those living near the Ghana-Burkina Faso border.
The NIA highlighted that the registration aims to facilitate easy border crossings, grant access to public services, and enhance security in the border area.
The NIA reaffirmed its mission to register all Ghanaians, both domestically and internationally, to issue Ghana Cards that will aid in economic, social, and political development. This initiative involves collaboration with various entities as prescribed by law.
"For the avoidance of doubt, NIA will continue to carry out its mandate of registering Ghanaians in Pusiga and environs aimed at expanding access to the Ghana Card and thereby improving identification and border security in that part of Ghana," the statement concluded.
