The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority, Sylvester Mensah has indicated the authority will soon be issuing instant biometric identity cards to its subscribers.
That, he said will eliminate delays in the issuance of ID cards to persons who want to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and also put an end to cases where some subscribers never receive their cards after registration.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on the successes chalked up by the Authority in managing the scheme Tuesday, Mr Mensah contended that the authority, just as any public institution, has experienced challenges in delivering its mandate but was confident that recently introduced reforms will significantly improve its operations.
“There is no public institution that has no challenges and essentially health insurance; we are blazing the trail as far as social health insurance is concerned. It’s an emerging discipline and we are all learning by the ropes and it hasn’t been an easy thing,” he noted.
“That notwithstanding,” the NHIA boss observed, “Ghana’s health insurance scheme is considered one of the leading models across the globe.”
He said in their effort to resolve difficulties in issuing ID cards on time, the authority is piloting an instant biometric project and hopes to roll it out on a large scale once the pilot is successful.
