Hearts of Oak played a sensational game in Senegal to win 3-2 away at Olympique de Ngor on Saturday.
Hearts, whose fans have yearned for their legendary come-back victories, produced one to remember to win 5-3 on aggregate over both legs after winning 2-1 in Accra two weeks ago.
There were 20,000 fans, almost exclusively baying for Ngor and they got an 8th minute goal.
But in the second half Eric Kumi levled before Hearts' Ivorian defender Robin Gnagne converted a spot-kick moments to put the Ghanaians ahead.
It did not last long as Ngor leveled, only for Paul Acquah to get a late win for the 2004 winners of the competition.
Key points
- Abdoulaye Soulama started after returning from international duty for Burkina Faso.
- Gilbert Fiamenyo, Hearts' lead striker, played only 38 minutes following an injury. Eric Kumi replaced the bulky forward.
- Isaac Mensah, Hearts' recent signing, started with Togolese Foovi Aguidi.
- Hearts, who won the maiden edition of the competition in 2004, looked in shape to torment the Senegalese outfit but they conceded an early goal to leave them a bit dampened.
- Since 1977, Hearts of Oak have played Senegalese sides 12 times; the Phobians have won eight, drawn three and lost one and have netted 18 goals and conceded 13 goals.
