In a bid to galvanise support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and maximise votes in the Volta Region, Mr Benjamin Kofi Quashie, Chair of the NDC’s South Africa Council of Elders, has pledged that a future John Mahama government will focus on unprecedented development in the region.
He urged the people of the Volta Region to vote overwhelmingly for the party in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Speaking during an interview on Accra 100.5 FM on Saturday, 30 November 2024, Mr Quashie emphasised that the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, is committed to addressing the grievances of the Volta Region.
“The next John Dramani Mahama government will take care of the Volta Region like never before,” he stated, calling on the electorate to rally behind the party for victory on 7 December.
Reflecting on past elections, Mr Quashie acknowledged voter apathy among NDC supporters in the Volta Region, which has traditionally been the party’s stronghold or “World Bank.”
He noted that many supporters felt underappreciated despite their unwavering loyalty to the NDC. “We lost the previous elections because our people complained of doing a lot for the NDC but not being recognised, which led to apathy,” he said.
The party has mobilised supporters across the region to canvass votes for John Mahama and other NDC parliamentary candidates to rectify this.
Mr Quashie stressed that Mahama’s pledge to ensure the region benefits significantly under the next NDC government has resonated with the people.
He argued that this has shifted political discourse in the region away from empty promises and vote-buying towards addressing economic realities and the NDC’s vision for the future.
Mr Quashie also praised the efforts of NDC parliamentary candidates in the region, highlighting their grassroots engagement strategies.
“This time, it’s not about rallies; it’s about educating the people, going to them, and listening to their concerns,” he noted. He cited areas such as Branda Toni, where residents live in dire conditions, as evidence of the urgent need for development and integration into national progress.
As the December polls draw nearer, Mr Quashie expressed confidence in the NDC’s campaign efforts in the Volta Region.
He concluded: “I believe the people will vote massively for their parliamentary candidates and John Mahama, delivering a resounding victory for the NDC.”
